Just Ideas
Directed by Christia Mercer, Gustav Berne Professor of Philosophy, Columbia University.
Just Ideas is a Marc Sanders Program initiative in collaboration with the Center for New Narratives at Columbia University. Using classic works of literature and philosophy, Just Ideas offers courses that transport people who are incarcerated into the world of ideas. Just Ideas trains teams of talented instructors so as to help them create a respective, challenging and rewarding intellectual experience. The Sanders Foundation provides substantial funding for this program including funds for the Sanders Scholars, formerly incarcerated students who lead in developing curriculum for prison education. Although Just Ideas has offered programming in a number of prisons, right now it is focussing on intensive mini-courses (usually in person, but right now using newly developed DVDs) at the Metropolitan Detention Center (a Federal Prison in Brooklyn).
